I’m currently supporting an 11-year-old girl who likes music, going to the cinema with her mates and stuffing her face with popcorn. She really dislikes everything to do with school and ended up getting excluded. After her teachers gave up on her it’s not surprising how she feels. Other than me she doesn’t really have anyone else.
What if I told you she gets angry very quickly, sometimes with no apparent reason? Kicking, biting and screaming may sometimes be the only way she can communicate how she feels. Learning is a whole other challenge and currently trying to get her to read is pointless, books will end up being thrown back at you.
If you are an engaging and creative individual who can facilitate a safe and fun learning experience for young people with various additional needs, this type of role could be for you. Your non-judgemental, empathic and person-centred nature will enable the young person to thrive and give them the freedom to express themselves, whilst feeling valued and accepted.
